This food is a gift of the earth, the sky, numerous living beings, and much hard and loving work. May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive this food. May we recognize and transform unwholesome mental formations, especially our greed and learn to eat with moderation. May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that reduces the suffering of living beings, stops contributing to climate change, and heals and preserves our precious planet. We accept this food so that we may nurture our brotherhood and sisterhood, build our Sangha, and nourish our ideal of serving all living beings. – Plum Village News

Happy Food

In late 2015, I joined the People’s Pilgrimage from Rome to Paris to bring the message of interfaith groups to the climate summit. As I walked through the communities of Italy and France – meeting, eating and connecting with farmers and local producers inspired me to eat better and healthier. The story of the slow food movement made me reimagine a world that can say no to giant fast food corporations which continue to pervade our societies. In my journey of nourishing myself with healthy food, I found so much delight in the beauty of raw food.

When you are in love, you pay attention. Love allows you to pay attention. Most likely, your world will open up to beauty like you’ve never seen or experienced before. This love affair started with the avocado. It just seemed like the perfect fit, as if they’re cuddling. Then I started imagining these fruits and vegetables in love – like a Banana having peelings for another, or Kiwe belonging together, and Lettuce getting it on. Since I’m a passionate lover of food and puns, it all just came together. The universe also helped me with all my corny friends who would send me punny food ideas.

Maybe this is just my way of connecting my humor to issues close to my heart – climate justice and food security. Punny food is dedicated to all the farmers I’ve met, the advocates, the pilgrims, Thich Nhat Hanh, and everyone who has taught me and the world about mindful eating.
